Album Review: Iron Maiden – Nights Of The Dead, Legacy Of The Beast: Live in Mexico City

Scream for me Mexico City! Scream for me Mexico City! If that doesn’t send chills up your spine you either have never heard Iron Maiden or you just don’t get them. Dating back to 1985’s masterpiece, Live After Death, Maiden have released a jaw-dropping 13 live albums. What is fantastic is they do no rely on re-hashing the same 12 songs over and over. The Legacy of the Beast tour admittedly was a bit of a greatest hits tour so the album does have more of the “hits” so-to-speak but no one is complaining for certain. Recorded in September of 2019 during the band’s three night stint at Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, the band spans material from the classic early years to their time with Blaze during Virtual XI (“The Clansman”) and The X Factor (“The Sign of the Cross”) through 2006’s A Matter of Life and Death (“For the Greater Good of God”). At no time did it feel like a band going through the motions or on a nostalgia trip.

To try and pick a stand-out track on this would be quite difficult. You have the rarity of songs like “For the Greater Good of God” which makes its first appearance on a Maiden live album. You have the absolute classic songs like “2 Minutes to Midnight” or “The Trooper”. What I can say as there isn’t a song in that set you could go get a beer or use the facilities. If you didn’t go before Churchill you’d best to have waited until you were on the way to the car. At least at home you can catch your breath while switching the CD or record.

As many fans were set to see the Legacy of the Beast tour in 2020 this is something to wet their appetite for certain. Nights of the Dead, Legacy of the Beast, Live in Mexico City is available in several formats including a standard 2CD Digipak, a limited edition deluxe 2CD book format, heavyweight 180g triple black vinyl and a limited edition heavyweight 180gMexican Flag triple colored vinyl and of course digitally. Pre-orders are available here.
